Tips for Kicking the Tobacco Habit
Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health and the health of others.  Cigarette smoking causes several diseases and makes others worse (cancer, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, etc).  The following is some information to help you kick the habit.

How to help yourself
1. Tell family, friends, and co-workers that you're quitting and ask them for support
2. Throw away all tobacco products, matches, lighters, and ashtrays
3. Stay busy on your quit day
4. Calculate how much money you spend per year on cigarettes; decide what you'll do with the money saved.
5. Identify problem situations/times and avoid them or plan how to deal with them.
6. Avoid places where people frequently smoke, especially when you first quit

How to cope with withdrawal symptoms
When you quit smoking, withdrawal symptoms are possible.  They can be mild to severe and some people don't have them at all.  Here are some ideas to help you deal with withdrawal symptoms:

  1. Anxiety, irritability: exercise, take a warm bath or shower, take deep breaths
  2. Trouble sleeping: avoid caffeine for a few hours before bedtime, take a warm bath or shower
  3. Hunger: drink water, eat low-calorie snacks (try fruit), chew sugarless gum
  4. Poor concentration: minimize the stress in your life
