Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia.  Dementia is defined as the loss of intellectual and/or social ability enough to interfere with daily functioning.  In Alzheimer's disease, the brain tissues disintegrate resulting in loss of memory. Alzheimer's disease is not a part of normal aging, but the risk of the disorder increases with age.  About 5% of people between the ages of 65 and 74 have Alzheimer's disease, while nearly half the people over the age of 85 have Alzheimer's.
What medical food had been approved for Alzheimer's disease?
Caprylidene (Axona) is the first medical food product approved for Alzheimer's disease.  Caprylidene is the first product in its class approved for the clinical dietary management of metabolic processes associated with Alzheimer's disease. WHAT? As we all know, glucose or sugar is the primary source of energy for the brain. Alzheimer's disease patients exhibit a decline in the ability to metabolize glu

cose in the brain.  As the amount of glucose available in the brain continues to decrease, damage occurs.  The damage can result in impaired memory, cognition, and brain shrinkage. These medical defects may occur 10 - 20 years before any Alzheimer's symptoms.

How does Caprylidene (Axona) work?
After ingestion, Axona is converted by the liver into ketone bodies, which is an alternative energy source for the brain.  Axona is designed to keep the levels of ketone bodies elevated so that the brain would be able to maintain normal function.  In a recent study with 152 patients, it was shown that patients that used Axona had significant improvement in cognitive function.

How is Axona taken?
Axona should be taken once a day after breakfast.  This medication comes in 40 gram packets.  The contents of one packet should be mixed with 4-8 ounces of water and shaken before

consumed.  The mixture should be consumed immediately.

What are the side effects?
Studies have shown that the most common side effects that can be seen while using this product is diarrhea, flatulence, stomach upset, and nausea.  Specific case studies, have implicated that Axona might worsen existing stomach conditions such as stomach ulcers.

This product will be available in the near future and by prescription only.  For more information please visit www.about-axona.com or contact your pharmacist or physician.
