Community Practice
Residency Program Guidelines
Program Organization Hen House Pharmacy provides this ASHP-APhA Accredited Community Pharmacy Residency Program. The program was established in July 2001 and expanded to two positions in 2004. It spans 12 months from the last week of June through June 30th of the following year. The resident will be employed by Balls Food Stores and receives an annual stipend of $35,000 plus comprehensive health benefits. Other benefits include one week paid vacation, seven paid holidays, and travel allowance to attend regional and national meetings or training opportunities. A separate work area is provided for the residents including a computer, telephone, bookshelf, file cabinet, and desk space. The two residency positions are each associated with an area school of pharmacy; one with the University of Missouri-Kansas City and the other with the University of Kansas. The resident is also given the opportunity to have Adjunct Clinical Faculty status with the corresponding university. Hen House Pharmacies precept students from area schools of pharmacy throughout the year. This allows the resident to interact with students. There is also the opportunity for didactic teaching at the schools of pharmacy. The staffing requirement is one day per week. The remainder of the time is devoted to practice-based research and developing, implementing, and marketing pharmaceutical care programs, which include disease state management, disease prevention/screenings, and educational programs.
Goals and Objectives
- To develop, implement, and market pharmaceutical care programs.
- To become recognized as competent resources for healthcare-related needs.
- To engage in practice-based research which leads to new knowledge about drug therapy or supports the provision of pharmacist interventions and community care services.
- To generate revenue for the pharmacy by providing cognitive services.
- To provide the resident with experience in the areas of professional relations, marketing, and teaching in addition to other activities.
- To serve as an agent for change in the promotion and advancement of the pharmacy profession.
- To provide direct patient care in a community pharmacy practice environment.
- To refine skills in communications, patient care, health and wellness promotion, practice management, marketing and compensation strategies, and technology.
- To gain experiences and abilities needed to prosper professionally in a competitive health care system.
Practice Site
Balls Food Stores is a family-owned supermarket chain local to the Kansas City area. It is comprised of 29 grocery stores with 20 pharmacies. The company provides outstanding corporate support for pharmacy services. The resident will work on programs with all Balls pharmacies. Each resident will have a base pharmacy; one at the Blackbob Hen House Market loacted in Olathe, Kansas, and the other at the Price Chopper located in Gladstone, Missouri.
Resident Qualifications
The resident must have a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and be licensed or eligible for licensure in the state of Kansas and/or Missouri. Additionally, the resident should be highly self-motivated, dedicated to advancing the pharmacy profession, and display an interest in promoting pharmaceutical care in the community pharmacy setting.
Application Procedure
Applicants should submit a letter of application containing a statement of his/her career goals and reasons for pursuing a residency in community pharmacy, curriculum vitae, transcript, and three letters of recommendation, postmarked no later than January 15th. Qualified applicants will then be contacted to schedule an interview and onsite tour. Interviews will commence in January and will be completed by March. Offers will be made through the National Match.
