The damaging effects of ultraviolet (UV) light on the eye has been an increasing concern in the medical world. There is evidence that UV light damage can increase the risk of developing cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, and growths on the eye. Excessive UV exposure to the eyes has also been linked to cancer.
Where does UV light come from? The major source of UV light is from direct sun exposure. Other sources of UV light include indoor tanning beds and black lights. In fact, the level of UV exposure is much higher from indoor tanning beds than from the sun.
UVA vs. UVB, Is there a difference to they eye? The "A" and "B" designations refer to the size of the light's wavelength. UVA has a long wavelength, while UVB has a medium wavelength. Although both UVA and UVB light can be damaging to our body, UVB light is most damaging to the eye because it directly affects our DNA.
Tips for protecting your eyes:
Wear sunglasses that protect 97 to 100% of UVA and UVB rays. Buy sunglasses that extend around your temples so UV rays can't enter from the side. Use a broad-trimmed hat to offer extended protection. Sunglasses should be especially worn during the summer months, when UV rays are three times stronger than in the winter months. Sunglasses should also be worn at the beach, in the water, while participating in winter sports, and at high altitudes. There are some important facts about sunglasses that many people may not know. 1. The tint or color of the lens has nothing to do with UV protection. 2. Lenses made of polycarbonate, a type of plastic, block more UV rays than lenses made of glass. 3. Even sunglasses that completely block UV rays will not protect the eye from light that arrives around the lens.
