Do you understand fully how to take all your medications, what they are for, or if they are the best for you and your disease state?  Although drugs are essential in helping resolve illnesses; if not taken correctly, they can lead to serious adverse reactions.  This is why, pharmacists are qualified to provide medication therapy management services to YOU.  Pharmacists can provide information on your medications, side effects, and any interactions that your medications may have with other drugs, foods, or herbal supplements.  Another benefit to taking advantage of medication therapy managements provided by your pharmacists is they may find cost saving alternatives to medications that you are already taking!

The Medication Therapy Management (MTM) program sounds appealing, but what is it really?
MTM is a program that most insurance companies offer.  Generally, pharmacies are contracted with specific insurance companies to provide this service.  It is designed to help patients deal with multiple drugs and chronic diseases to ensure that covered Medicare Part D drugs prescribed are appropriately used to provide the most benefit to you, the patient.  It is also designed to reduce the risks of adverse events.

What are the benefits of MTM programs?
Patients that take multiple medications can greatly benefit by this program.  The MTM program allows a one-on-one meeting with a pharmacist that can counsel on all medications, including herbal supplements.  Any questions or concerns regarding drug medications can be addressed by the pharmacist.  During the appointment, the pharmacist will:

  1. Provide a personal review of all medications, including over-the-counter and herbal supplements, to make sure that you are only taking medications that you need and will address any problems with your medication which may require contacting you physician.
  2. Provide advice on how to use all your medications so any side effects or drug interactions will be decreased.
  3. Provide advice on cost saving medications.

Who is eligible for Medication Therapy Management services?
Patients who are eligible for Medication Therapy Management are those that have multiple chronic diseases such as diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, heart failure, or high cholesterol, take multiple medications, and most likely to spend $4000 on medications.

How do I participate in this program?
If you are interested in this program, you should contact your insurance's customer service department to see if you may be eligible for this service.  Generally, your insurance company will send a list to the closest pharmacy that they are contracted with to provide this service.

For additional information, please contact your pharmacist or insurance company.
