Why is Obesity Growing?

  • Portion distortion
o Restaurants serve increased portion sizes.
o Super-size options
  • Technological increases have caused society to become more sedentary
o PSP®, Playstation®, X-Box®, movies
  • Fast food and processed foods have become stables of our society
o Increased availability
o Increased appeal (i.e. toys in kid's meals)
  • Vegetables, fruits, and whole grains cereals are more expensive.

How Much Should We Exercise?
  • Adults need at least 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week.
  • Children need to be physically active at least 60 minutes every day or most days of the week.

As a society, we are underestimating the major health risk associated with obesity.  It is a vicious cycle that will not end if left untreated and unrecognized by parents and

society.  We need to start taking action immediately for our children and grand-children's sake.
