Why is the Sudafed® behind the counter?
While pseudoephedrine does a great job relieving nasal and sinus congestion, it is also an essential ingredient in manufacturing methamphetamine, an illegal street drug.  The new federal laws that put the pseudoephedrine products behind the counter are designed to combat the methamphetamine epidemic.

What is methamphetamine?
Methamphetamine is a highly addictive, dangerous, and illegal street drug that can be manufactured with common household items.  Pseudoephedrine is a required ingredient in its manufacturing.  Side effects of methamphetamine include nervousness, insomnia, paranoia, delusions, and even heart and kidney failure.  Methamphetamine also has very serious withdrawal side effects which lead to the addiction.

What are some of the common products that contain pseudoephedrine?

  • Claritin-D®
  • Sudafed®
  • Aleve Cold & Sinus®
  • Mucinex-D®
  • Actifed®
  • Chlor-trimeton Allergy-D®

  • Generic versions of the above drugs (if available)

Do I need a prescription to buy a pseudoephedrine-containing product?
No, you can still buy pseudoephedrine without a prescription.

Do I have to have my driver's license on me?
A government issued ID is required by federal law to purchase pseudoephedrine.  You must also be at least 18 years of age.  Your information will be recorded in a logbook so that law officials can tell if someone is purchasing more than the allotted amount of pseudoephedrine.

What information is recorded?
The pharmacy technician or pharmacist must record the date and time, his or her name or initials, the product being sold, and the quantity sold as well as your name and address.

How much can I buy at one time?
You can buy no more than 3.6 grams in one day or 9 grams within a 30 day period.

I see Sudafed PE® on the shelves.  Is it the same thing?
Both are nasal decongestants, but they are different drugs.  Sudafed PE® contains phenylephrine.  Many over-the-counter products have reformulated their products to contain phenylephrine, which cannot be used to manufacture methamphetamine.  Products containing pseudoephedrine are generally recommended for patients with severe congestion.

Where can I find more information about pseudoephedrine?
